Chess is played by two players, on a square checkered board with 64 squares. Each player starts the game with 16 white or black game pieces. These pieces consist of a king, a queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and 8 pawns. Each piece type moves and captures other pieces on the board in a unique way.
